Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Fool's Gold' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Fortunei Stenantha'. This medium-sized cultivar is visually distinctive for its ovate, light green leaves with irregular, heavily rippled yellow-gold margins that are brightest near the leaf tip, a coloration that is most pronounced in spring and fades during summer heat.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Fool's Gold' forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and benefits from protection from intense afternoon sun which can cause marginal browning. Its medium size and textured foliage make it suitable for mid-border positions, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover under deciduous trees. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain evenly moist, well-drained soil, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
