Overview

Registered in 2002 as a seedling of *Hosta* 'Fond Hope' with an unknown pollen parent, 'Fond Farewell' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with an unusual gray cast. The broadly ovate, moderately wavy foliage measures 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) long by 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) wide, with 16 to 18 vein pairs and slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

This hosta forms a substantial mound 24 inches (61.0 cm) tall and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved cultivars, where its gray-blue coloration remains most pronounced. Suitable companions include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it appropriate as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor accordingly in typical hosta-growing zones.
