Overview

Registered in 2013 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Shade Fanfare', 'Floral Dance' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its profuse, simultaneous bloom of tall scapes above a low, compact foliage crown. Its variegated leaves feature medium green, slightly rippled margins with a subtle sheen on both surfaces, and the plant reaches approximately 15 inches (38 cm) in height with a spread of 35 inches (89 cm).

In the Garden

'Floral Dance' performs best in partial to full shade, where its slow growth rate and compact habit make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. The low mound of ovate, lightly wavy leaves—each about 6.25 inches (16 cm) long and 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide with 5 to 6 vein pairs—provides a tidy groundcover effect. Its tall, straight green scapes, reaching 30 to 40 inches (76 to 102 cm) in height, rise well above the foliage and carry numerous flowers that open all at once, creating a dramatic display for a small hosta. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its scale and leaf texture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Floral Dance' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
