Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Flemish Master' is a large variegated cultivar derived from a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' crossed with *Hosta* 'Blue Mammoth'. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of medium blue-green leaf centers with broad, greenish white, flat margins, all overlaid with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Flemish Master' forms a mound-like clump reaching 22.5 inches (57.2 cm) in height and 44 inches (111.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom and variegation are most pronounced. The broadly ovate, moderately corrugated leaves, each 11.25 inches (28.6 cm) long and 7.875 inches (20.0 cm) wide with 9 to 11 vein pairs, create a substantial textural presence. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials that complement its cool blue-green and white palette.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents in typical hosta-growing zones.
