Overview
Registered in 1997 from unknown parentage, 'Flat Clyde' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its very shiny, dark green leaves with flat margins and a compact, mound-like habit. The variegated foliage—though the registry notes dark green margins without specifying center color—and diminutive size make it a precise, low-growing accent.
In the Garden
'Flat Clyde' forms a dense mound 4 inches (10.2 cm) tall and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate that suits it for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. Its small leaves (2.25 inches long, 1.75 inches wide) and scapes reaching 8 to 9 inches (20.3 to 22.9 cm) allow it to pair well with other miniature hostas, dwarf ferns, or fine-textured groundcovers in dappled to full shade. The plant’s compact size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Flat Clyde' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly in moist conditions.
