Overview
Registered in 1978 by Ch. Tompkins and introduced by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'Flamboyant' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from X-ray treated seed of a golden seedling, with unknown pollen parentage. Its visual distinction lies in leaves bearing streaked margins, a pattern resulting from the induced mutation.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), with individual leaves measuring 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide and displaying 12 vein pairs. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland garden settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
