Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Angel' registered in 2002, 'Firefighter's Angel' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its unusual color change at the leaf margin. The ovate leaves are light green with moderately rippled margins, dull on both surfaces, and measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with 11 to 13 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Firefighter's Angel' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits placement in the middle of a shaded border or as an accent among ferns and other shade perennials. The green scapes rise 12 to 14 inches (30.5 to 35.6 cm) above the foliage and bear floriferous clusters of flowers; the buds form a notably large, ball-shaped mass before opening.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer weather, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or repellents.
