Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Standard' registered by the American Hosta Society in 2003, 'Fire Opal' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its light green leaf centers with pure white margins, and a narrow band of darker green retained between the two zones. This three-color pattern, combined with broadly ovate, lightly corrugated leaves, gives the plant a crisp, variegated appearance.
In the Garden
'Fire Opal' forms a mound-shaped clump reaching 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 36 inches (91 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the white margins remain stable and the green centers hold their color without scorching. The plant's medium size and upright scapes make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shade gardens, pairing well with ferns, heucheras, or other fine-textured perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in gardens where these pests are prevalent; the moderately textured leaves are not particularly resistant.
