Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Fertile Phyllis' is a giant blue-green cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its exceptionally large, broadly ovate leaves with a blue-green-gray cast, slightly rippled margins, and moderate corrugation, which form a substantial mound.
In the Garden
This giant hosta reaches 65 inches (165.1 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its heavy-textured leaves resist slug damage. The near-white flowers appear on green scapes 40 to 46 inches (101.6 to 116.8 cm) tall in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it a strong specimen or background plant.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. The cultivar's heavy leaf substance provides notable resistance to slug feeding, reducing the need for pest management in typical hosta-growing zones.
