Overview
Registered in 1983 by S. Moldovan, this giant variegated cultivar was developed as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Big Sam'. It is visually distinctive for its very large, heavily textured leaves with dark green, ruffled margins and a contrasting lighter center, forming a substantial mound.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Fernwood' reaches a mature spread of approximately 66 inches (168 cm) and a height of 48 inches (122 cm), making it suitable as a bold specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its large leaves can develop without scorching. Given its size, it is not suited for containers and pairs well with other large perennials such as ferns, *Astilbe*, or *Rodgersia*.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
