Overview
Registered in 2012 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Faded Genes' is a large hosta distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with a slightly shiny upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath. The ovate, corrugated leaves have tapered bases and eight vein pairs, with leaf margins that share the same deep blue-green coloration.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 39 inches (99.1 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom remains most pronounced. The substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns or woodland perennials; its large leaves also work well in mass plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the corrugated texture offers some resistance; deer browsing is possible in areas where they are present.
