Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Extasy' is a small-sized cultivar derived from a streaked form of *Hosta* 'Sweet Susan' crossed with a complex hybrid involving *H. rupifraga*, *H.* 'Fall Bouquet', and *H.* 'Blue Blush'. The plant is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins, the margins being approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide and flat, contrasting with the glaucous, green central leaf surface.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Extasy' reaches a mature diameter of 17 inches (43.2 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom is best preserved. The small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation; companion plants might include ferns, heucheras, or small shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, applying fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the glaucous leaf surface may offer slight resistance to slugs.
