Overview

Registered in 1986 by the American Hosta Society from unknown parentage, 'Excalibur' is a small hosta distinguished by its medium green leaves with narrow, white, slightly undulating margins. The leaf blades reach 6 inches (15.2 cm) in length and 3 inches (7.6 cm) in width, bearing 4 to 5 vein pairs and a marginal band 0.12 to 0.25 inches (0.3 to 0.6 cm) wide.

In the Garden

'Excalibur' forms a compact clump suitable for the front of a border, rock garden, or container. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and reaches a mature height of approximately 8 to 10 inches with a spread of 12 to 18 inches. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, and dwarf astilbes; its small size makes it an excellent candidate for troughs or mixed containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, applying water at soil level to avoid leaf spot. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. Like most hostas, 'Excalibur' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
