Overview
Originated by K. Watanabe and registered in 2001 by P. & J. Ruh, this small hosta is distinguished by its unusual deep lavender-blue, star-shaped flowers. The foliage forms a compact mound of medium green, lance-shaped leaves with slightly rippled margins, a lightly corrugated surface, and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
Reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 17 inches (43.2 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate, ‘Evening Star’ is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for troughs or small shaded nooks.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
