Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Erie Magic' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Midwest Magic' that produces a medium-sized mound of blue-green foliage edged in golden yellow. The leaves are cordate at the base, measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, and bear 12 to 13 pairs of veins; the upper surface is slightly shiny, while the underside carries a glaucous bloom.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 48 inches (121.9 cm) and a height of 25 inches (63.5 cm), 'Erie Magic' forms a dense, mound-like clump suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen beneath deciduous trees. Its moderate growth rate and broad, variegated leaves make it an effective groundcover in partial to full shade, where it pairs well with ferns, epimediums, and other woodland perennials. The scapes rise 24 to 36 inches (61.0 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls.
