Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Enigma' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its blue-green leaves with a highly irregular, dark green margin and a light green center. The leaf blades are ovate with rounded bases, measure 7.1 inches (18.0 cm) long by 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, and bear nine vein pairs; a glaucous bloom covers the undersides, and the margins are slightly rippled.
In the Garden
'Enigma' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 15.7 inches (39.9 cm) and a height of 9.8 inches (24.9 cm), with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited to small borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation due to its compact size. Companion plants might include ferns or shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting foliage textures.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Enigma' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
