Overview

Registered in 2016 by an unknown hybridizer, *Hosta* 'Ems Pfeil' is a miniature cultivar notable for its arrow-shaped, blue-green leaves with lightly wavy margins. The pod parent is *Hosta* 'Abby'; the pollen parent is unknown. The cultivar name references the River Ems, which flows through Rheine, Germany.

In the Garden

Reaching approximately 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter and 5 inches (12 cm) in height, this mound-forming plant is suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or troughs. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its small size and compact habit make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or miniature sedges.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and employ control measures if necessary.
