Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, *Hosta* 'Emerald Skies' is a small-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Skies' distinguished by its variegated foliage: ovate, lightly cupped leaves with green, flat margins and a dull, non-glaucous surface on both sides. The leaf blade measures 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with 10 to 11 vein pairs, and is noted for its thick substance.
In the Garden
Forming a dense, mound-like clump 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, 'Emerald Skies' is best suited to partial to full shade, where its thick leaves resist scorch better than many thin-leaved hostas. Its small stature and compact habit make it an appropriate choice for the front of a shaded border, rock gardens, or containers. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry spells, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance offers moderate resistance to slug and deer damage, though monitoring is still advisable in areas with high pest pressure.
