Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sea Angel Wings', 'Emerald Ruff Cut' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its bright golden-yellow leaves with narrow, dark green, heavily rippled margins. The ovate, wavy foliage measures 22.9 cm (9 in) long and 17.8 cm (7 in) wide, with slightly shiny upper surfaces and dull undersides; the green margin is approximately 1.3 cm (0.5 in) wide. The plant produces scapes up to 71.1 cm (28 in) tall, and its coloration is notably vivid early in the season, with a reflush of bright color occurring in mid-season.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 50.8 cm (20 in) in height and 61.0 cm (24 in) in diameter, with a medium-fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch on the gold centers. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds; companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting foliage textures.
Care Notes
Regular watering is essential during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and a balanced slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring supports healthy growth. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, and preventive measures such as baiting or fencing are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
