Overview
Registered in 1991 by D. Stone and P. Ruh, this miniature hosta forms a compact mound of satiny green leaves edged with medium yellow undulating margins. The leaf blades measure 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) in length and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in width, with five pairs of veins and a glossy underside.
In the Garden
'Emerald Gem' reaches a mature clump diameter of 8 inches (20.3 cm) and a height of 5 inches (12.7 cm), making it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other miniature perennials such as small ferns or creeping sedums. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
