Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Emerald Elf' is a miniature cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its exceptionally shiny, bright green foliage with light green margins. The leaves are ovate to broadly ovate, measuring 2 inches (5.1 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, with 4 to 5 vein pairs, and exhibit light cupping, folding, and waviness.
In the Garden
'Emerald Elf' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders due to its miniature size. Its small dimensions also make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its glossy foliage can be appreciated at close range.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Emerald Elf' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
