Overview

A 2009 sport of *Hosta* 'Dixie Chickadee', 'Emerald City Chick' is a small, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its very shiny, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 4 inches (10.2 cm) long and 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide, form a dense, mound-like clump.

In the Garden

Reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, this compact hosta is well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It tolerates more sun than many hostas, though it performs best in partial shade with consistent moisture. Its glossy foliage pairs effectively with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While somewhat resistant to slug damage due to its thick leaves, monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions. Deer may browse the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
