Overview
Registered in 1993 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Elephant Burgers' is a small variegated cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaf margins and rounded leaf bases. The leaves measure 6 inches (15.2 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, with six vein pairs, and the plant forms a compact mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
This small hosta is best suited to partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage can develop without scorching. Its mature dimensions—roughly 1.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide—make it appropriate for the front of a shaded border, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or epimediums, and its compact size also suits container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Elephant Burgers' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
