Overview
Registered in 2016 by R. Balitewicz, 'Elatior Falls' is a giant, fast-growing hosta distinguished by its large, variegated leaves with heavily rippled, medium green margins and a very shiny upper surface. The plant forms a mound-like habit reaching 35 inches (88.9 cm) in height and 80 inches (203.2 cm) in diameter, with ovate leaves measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide, each bearing 15 to 16 vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Elatior Falls' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it a strong specimen for the back of a shaded border or as a focal point in a woodland garden. The plant’s fast growth rate and large dimensions allow it to fill space quickly, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its broad, shiny foliage. Its semi-upright leaf posture and tall scapes—reaching 55 to 65 inches (139.7 to 165.1 cm)—add vertical interest, though it is not suited for containers due to its giant size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
