Overview

Registered in 1984 by R. Savory, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana*. It is distinguished by its variegated foliage, featuring medium green margins on leaves that reach 3 inches (7.6 cm) in length and 2 inches (5.1 cm) in width, with six pairs of veins.

In the Garden

Hosta 'Egret' forms a compact clump 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature astilbes. Its small size also makes it an excellent choice for trough gardens or small-scale woodland settings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While hostas are generally susceptible to slugs and deer, the small, compact habit of this cultivar may make it easier to protect with barriers or repellents if needed.
