Overview

Registered in 2014, 'Eden's Ruff and Tuff' is a giant hosta of unknown parentage, distinguished by its heavily corrugated, thick-textured blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a rough, unruly clump form. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring up to 16 inches long and 11 inches wide with 14 to 16 vein pairs, are moderately cupped and lightly twisted, with a dull surface above and below; the petiole extends into the leaf blade, contributing to the plant's substantial substance.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 68 inches in diameter and 36 inches in height, with a moderate growth rate. Scapes of greenish blue rise 40 to 52 inches above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, though it tolerates more sun than typical for blue-leaved hostas, making it suitable for brighter positions in the landscape. Its giant size suits it as a specimen or focal point in woodland gardens and shade borders; companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, but standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
