Overview
Registered in 2007 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Dumbo' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally large, wavy leaves with medium green margins and slight corrugation. The leaf blades reach 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in width, forming an extra-large mound.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its substantial foliage creates a bold textural presence. Mature plants form a mound approximately 3 feet in height and 5 to 6 feet in spread, making it suitable as a specimen or backdrop in shaded borders. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad leaves.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor, particularly in warmer climates. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Dumbo' is susceptible to slug damage; monitor and manage as needed. Deer may browse the foliage in areas with high deer pressure.
