Overview
Registered in 2007 from seedling parents, 'Dr John' is a giant variegated hosta reaching 24 inches in height and 44 inches in diameter. Its most distinctive features are the large, broadly ovate leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a notable reflexive flower scape bearing clear white flowers.
In the Garden
'Dr John' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its substantial 12-inch-long by 13-inch-wide leaves can develop fully without scorching. The plant's upright, moderate growth habit and giant mature size make it suitable as a specimen or back-of-border accent in larger shade gardens. Its large scapes, reaching 55 to 60 inches, elevate the white flowers well above the foliage, adding vertical interest.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Dr John' is susceptible to slug damage on its broad leaves and may require protection from deer in areas where they are prevalent.
