Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Alvatine Taylor', 'Doubloons' is a large, slow-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with medium gold margins. The broadly ovate, lightly wavy and corrugated foliage measures up to 10 inches long and 7.6 inches wide, with a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

'Doubloons' forms an upright mound reaching 19 inches in height and 52 inches in diameter at maturity, making it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins maintain their color without scorching. The gold scapes, rising 20 to 33 inches, carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer and pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Doubloons' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
