Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster of the American Hosta Society, 'Dorset Clown' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. Its distinctive foliage features blue-green leaves with white margins, further marked by yellow and white streaking across the leaf surface, and a glaucous bloom on both upper and lower surfaces.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited for border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its compact size. The broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and lightly wavy margins provide textural contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or small grasses.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable, as with most hostas; the glaucous leaf coating may offer slight resistance to moisture-related issues.
