Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Dorset Clown' registered in 2010, 'Dorset Blueblood' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, heavily corrugated foliage with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces. The leaves are ovate with rounded bases, deeply wavy margins, and flat, blue-green edges, creating a dense, textured mound that is notably thick and slow-growing.
In the Garden
'Dorset Blueblood' reaches approximately 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, forming a compact, low mound suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or shaded containers. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with fine-textured ferns, small sedges, or other miniature hostas. Its small stature and very slow growth rate make it an excellent choice for troughs or small-scale woodland plantings.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves show moderate resistance to slug damage, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions.
