Overview
Registered in 2009 by Paul and Jean Ruh, *Hosta* 'Doreen' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its green leaves with pale yellow-gold margins. The leaf blades are ovate with rounded bases, dull-surfaced both above and below, and feature lightly rippled, slightly folded margins with seven vein pairs.
In the Garden
This slow-growing, mound-forming hosta reaches approximately 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in height and spreads to 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for the genus, and is well-suited to small garden spaces, rock gardens, or the front of mixed borders. Its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Suggested companions include other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls appropriate to typical hosta-growing zones.
