Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Don's Gator Hide' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its intensely corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with heavy substance, very shiny surfaces, and green flat margins, combined with red coloration at the base of both petioles and scapes.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its heavy leaf substance provides good resistance to foliar damage. The substantial, textured foliage makes it a strong accent plant in shaded borders or woodland gardens, pairing well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. The heavy substance may reduce slug damage compared to thinner-leaved cultivars, though standard slug management is still advisable in moist conditions.
