Overview
Registered in 1999 by Paul Ruh, this medium-sized cultivar arose from a hybrid of *Hosta montana*. 'Donahue Piecrust' is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with heavy, rippled margins—a trait evoked by its cultivar name—combined with a dull surface texture on both sides and a cordate (heart-shaped) leaf base.
In the Garden
'Donahue Piecrust' forms an upright clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It is suited to partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland garden settings, though its slow spread limits its use as a rapid ground cover.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, particularly on the textured leaf margins.
