Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 1996, 'Domaine de Courson' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its large, medium green leaves with flat margins, slightly shiny upper surfaces, and dull, waxy undersides. The cordate-based leaves reach 18 inches in length and 10 inches in width, with seven to eight vein pairs, while the plant forms a substantial mound up to 60 inches in diameter and 30 inches in height.
In the Garden
With its giant stature, 'Domaine de Courson' requires ample space and is best suited as a specimen or focal point in a shaded border, where its broad leaves provide strong textural contrast. It performs well in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its scale. Its moderate growth rate means it will reach mature dimensions over several seasons, and it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may cause damage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
