Overview
Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, this medium-sized cultivar results from a cross between *Hosta longipes* (pod parent) and *Hosta pycnophylla* (pollen parent). 'Doctor Fu Manchu' is distinguished by its dark green leaves with heavily rippled margins and a slightly shiny upper surface, forming a dense, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Doctor Fu Manchu' reaches approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its compact mound form suits border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rock gardens. The textured foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other fine-textured shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the rippled leaf margins may offer some but not complete resistance.
