Overview
Registered in 1983 by P. Aden, this small hosta cultivar originated from a cross between *H. 'Gala'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Halo'* (pollen parent). *Hosta 'Dixie Joy'* is distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves with green centers and gold margins that exhibit green flecking within the border.
In the Garden
With a mature height of 6 inches (15.2 cm) and a spread of 10 inches (25.4 cm), *'Dixie Joy'* is suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, tiarella, or miniature sedges that complement its compact form. The 11-inch (27.9 cm) scapes bear flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas, though the small, narrow leaves may be less appealing to browsing animals than larger-leaved cultivars.
