Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Dixie Chickadee' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Dixie Chick' and is classified as a small-sized cultivar. Its leaves are lance-shaped with tapered bases, measuring 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long by 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide, and display yellow centers with green flecks, bordered by dark green, flat margins 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide; both leaf surfaces are very shiny.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its glossy foliage and contrasting margins can be appreciated up close.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
