Overview

Registered in 1998 by Paul Ruh, *Hosta* 'Distinction' is a giant, upright-growing cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinguished by its very large, dull-surfaced leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a cordate (heart-shaped) base.

In the Garden

'Hosta' is best suited for partial to full shade, typical of most hostas. At maturity, this giant cultivar forms a substantial clump 54 inches (137 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. Its imposing size makes it an effective specimen or focal point in the shade garden; it is too large for container cultivation. The upright leaf habit allows for underplanting with smaller shade perennials such as ferns or epimediums.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, dull leaves may be attractive to both pests.
