Overview

Registered in 1991 by H. Hatfield as a sport of *Hosta* 'Zounds', 'Dick Ward' is a large cultivar distinguished by its light yellow-green leaves with wide, dark green, undulated margins. The leaf blade measures 9 inches (22.9 cm) in both length and width, with 24 pairs of veins, and the dark green margin is approximately 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide.

In the Garden

'Dick Ward' forms a substantial clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margin coloration is most pronounced, though it can tolerate some morning sun in cooler climates. The large, rounded leaves make it suitable as a specimen plant or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Dick Ward' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
