Overview
Registered in 1985 by C. Owens as a sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon', 'Dianne' is a small, variegated cultivar distinguished by its multi-margined leaves. The foliage, measuring 4 inches (10.2 cm) long and 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) wide with six vein pairs, displays a complex pattern of marginal variegation that sets it apart from its solid yellow parent.
In the Garden
'Dianne' forms a compact mound reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its variegated leaves remain most stable, and pairs well with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, 'Dianne' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
