Year registered2005
Section classIII-2

Overview

Registered in 2005 from a seedling parent with unknown pollen parent, 'Delaware River' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its intense blue-green foliage and red-purple petioles that extend into the leaf bases. The ovate, lightly wavy leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with eight vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

'Delaware River' forms a mound 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter and 13 inches (33.0 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom and blue-green margins remain most pronounced. The red-purple petioles provide subtle contrast when planted near yellow or chartreuse companions such as *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' or ferns.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures are advisable in damp conditions. Deer may browse new growth in spring.
