Section classI-2

Overview

Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, 'Delaware Blue Hen' is a giant hosta distinguished by its exceptionally large, heavily textured blue-green leaves. The broadly ovate, cordate-based foliage reaches 19 inches in length and 12.75 inches in width, with 15 to 16 vein pairs, and exhibits a glaucous bloom on both surfaces. Leaves are lightly twisted, moderately folded, lightly wavy, and moderately corrugated, with flat margins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, fast-growing mound 32 inches tall and 70 inches in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its broad blue foliage. Its substantial size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable, as the large, textured leaves are attractive to both pests.
