Overview
Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Deep Pockets' is a large, variegated cultivar distinguished by its intensely corrugated, nearly round leaves with deep cupping and a very shiny surface on both sides. The medium to dark green leaves have flat margins and a cordate base, creating a richly textured, semi-upright mound.
In the Garden
'Deep Pockets' forms a substantial clump 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its thick, corrugated foliage provides strong textural contrast alongside finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or astilbes. The semi-upright habit and large size make it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring is still advisable in damp conditions.
