Overview

Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Deceiver' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'William Lachman'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Permanent Wave'* (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its lime green leaves that develop unstable streaking in shades of greenish yellow, pale yellow, yellow, and creamy white, particularly along the slightly rippled margins, with a notable seasonal color change throughout the growing season.

In the Garden

'Deceiver' forms a mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the leaf colors remain most stable, and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. The broadly ovate, moderately wavy leaves with cordate bases and lightly corrugated surfaces pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or woodland garden settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are recommended, as the tender foliage may be attractive to these pests.
