Overview
Registered in 2006 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Devon Green', 'Dax' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: medium green leaves with irregular dark green streaks and variable-width margins extending 1.0 to 3.0 cm into the blade. The leaf surface is notably very shiny adaxially and slightly shiny abaxially, with flat margins and a lightly folded, ovate form with rounded bases.
In the Garden
'Dax' reaches a mature spread of approximately 51.6 cm (20.3 in) and a height of 36.8 cm (14.5 in), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to light shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture due to its compact size. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers that complement its glossy, variegated leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Dax' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in high-pressure areas.
