Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'David F. Mahoney' is a giant, vase-shaped cultivar of unknown parentage, speculated to be a cross between 'Frances Williams' and *Hosta montana* 'Aureomarginata'. It is visually distinctive for its massive, nearly round, medium blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the upper surface, reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) long by 14 inches (35.6 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, slow-growing clump that matures to 67 inches (170.2 cm) in diameter and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded to partially shaded borders. Its large, blue-green foliage pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color. Due to its substantial size, it is not recommended for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
