Overview

Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Dauntless' is a large blue-green cultivar derived from *Hosta sieboldiana* as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue, heavily corrugated foliage that forms a tall, mound-like clump, with leaf margins that are slightly rippled and curled at the tips.

In the Garden

'Dauntless' reaches a mature spread of approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 22 inches (55.9 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous coloration is most pronounced. The substantial, deeply corrugated leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade perennials that contrast in texture. Its tall mound habit and scapes reaching 22 to 23 inches (55.9 to 58.4 cm) make it suitable for mid-border positions in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
