Overview
Registered in 2005 by originator A. Eason and registrants P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Dartmoor Forest' is a large, upright cultivar derived from *Hosta rectifolia* as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent. Its distinctive appearance features dark green, slightly rippled leaf margins on ovate, lightly cupped and twisted leaves that are dull on both surfaces, with moderate folding and light corrugation.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 48 inches (121.9 cm) and a height of 27 inches (68.6 cm), with an upright growth habit and slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its rather open, non-compact form makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. Its large size and upright habit allow pairing with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its dark green variegation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
