Overview
Registered in 2010 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Karin', 'Dark Matter' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally dark, nearly black foliage. Its blue-green leaves, combined with a glaucous bloom beneath and dark green, slightly rippled margins, produce a visual effect darker than other so-called "black" hostas. The plant forms a dense, mound-like clump and produces large lavender flowers on scapes 14 to 16 inches (35.6–40.6 cm) tall.
In the Garden
'Dark Matter' reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark leaf color is most pronounced. The nearly round, lightly cupped leaves, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide with 12 to 13 vein pairs, create a solid textural presence. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its dark foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves provide moderate resistance to slugs and deer, though monitoring is advisable in moist conditions. Typical hosta-growing zones are appropriate for this cultivar.
